Dr. Jeffrey Martin

Dr. Jeffrey Martin is a native Texan who grew up outside Austin, Texas. He completed his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Martin began his audiology clinical work at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Several years later, he returned to Texas and obtained his PhD at the University of Texas at Dallas. He remained at UT Dallas and has contributed greatly via research, administration and clinical roles within the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (BBS), Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program and the Callier Center for Communication Disorders. Dr. Martin’s research interests focus on the study of behavioral and electrophysiological measures of auditory processing and related disorders. Following many years at UT Dallas, Dr. Martin, his wife, Rachel, and their children, Isabel, Zara and Zach, relocated to the Pacific Northwest where he held teaching, administrative and clinical roles at Western Washington University, Seattle Hearing, Speech, and Deaf Center and the University of Washington Medical Center, respectively. More recently, his family relocated to Boston, where Dr. Martin accepted a teaching position in the new AuD program between Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He spends his personal time enjoying the great outdoors, traveling, listening and playing music and family time.

How did you first learn about the Callier Center for Communication Disorders?

As an audiologist and PhD student at UT Dallas, I learned firsthand about the amazing work being done at the Callier Center for Communication Disorders. Many of our research projects were directly related to the clinical services being provided at Callier.

What is your relationship with the Callier Center?

Indeed, I would not be where I am today, or the person I am today, without the Callier Center. I feel extremely lucky to have been able to work (and play) with so many terrific people at Callier for so many years.

Did your family benefit from the Callier Center?

Yes, our daughter Isabel received speech services for about a year.

What movitvated you to create the Dr. Jeffrey Martin Fellowship in Audiology Research?

Callier helped me grow in so many ways, both personally and professionally. The student fellowship was established in light of the tremendous support and generosity that I received while at Callier.

Why is education of future clinicians and researchers important to you?

Clinical research is essential to the well-being of any profession, including audiology. In my view, mechanisms to attract and support student research are vital to the growth and maintenance of UT Dallas programs focused on audiology and the hearing sciences.

How do you hope your student fellowship will impact a Callier student, their future and the impact they will have on others?

It is my hope that the fellowship provides a Callier student with some financial “legs” to get their research ideas off the ground. The real joy is being able to see students present their work before others, which is a contribution to the profession. If I can be helpful to that goal in some way, there will be smiles all around.
