Children receive hearing evaluations, speech-language evaluations, medical evaluations, and other services as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information is also gathered from the child\u2019s physicians, current teachers, speech-language pathologists, current audiologists, and other professionals working with the child. The purpose of these evaluations is to determine if a child is a candidate for a cochlear implant and to provide the family with information about the benefits a cochlear implant might provide the child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"#audiology-evaluation\" class=\"scroll-to\">Audiology Evaluation<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#speech-language-evaluation\" class=\"scroll-to\">Speech-Language Evaluation<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#medical-evaluation\" class=\"scroll-to\">Medical Evaluation<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#psychological-evaluation\" class=\"scroll-to\">Psychological Evaluation<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#social-work-consultation\" class=\"scroll-to\">Social Work Consultation<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#family-meeting-device-selection\" class=\"scroll-to\">Family Meeting\/Device Selection<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"audiology-evaluation\">Audiology Evaluation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hearing testing is completed to determine if the child\u2019s hearing qualifies him\/her as a candidate for a cochlear implant.&nbsp; Unaided (without hearing aids) and aided testing (with hearing aids) is conducted, as well as testing to evaluate if the child is able to understand any sounds or speech he\/she may be able to hear.&nbsp; This evaluation typically requires more than one appointment for young children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"speech-language-evaluation\">Speech-Language Evaluation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An evaluation of the child\u2019s communication skills is conducted in order to determine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>What the child understands. <\/li><li>How the child communicates with others.<\/li><li>How the child uses listening when communicating.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"medical-evaluation\">Medical Evaluation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A medical evaluation, including an MRI, is completed. Children may also be referred for other testing if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"psychological-evaluation\">Psychological Evaluation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A basic behavioral assessment is completed on each child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"social-work-consultation\">Social Work Consultation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional resources may be provided depending on the family\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"family-meeting-device-selection\">Family Meeting and Device Selection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A family meeting is scheduled with all team members to discuss if the child is a candidate for a cochlear implant, test results and the potential benefits of having a cochlear implant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To schedule an appointment for a cochlear implant candidacy evaluation, please call the Cochlear Implant Coordinator at Children\u2019s Health at\u00a0<a href=\"tel:+19728831260\">(972) 883-1260<\/a>\u00a0or the Callier Center Cochlear Implant Candidacy scheduling at 972-883-3034.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UTD Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program evaluates children using a best practice, interdisciplinary approach.
