They know that communication is central to connecting with loved ones. They also recognize that the ability to communicate is not a given for every child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three of the Lacertes\u2019 grandchildren have received speech-language services at the Callier Center. At age 2, one of their granddaughters participated in Talking Toddlers, a speech-language therapy program that improves communication in children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe was so frustrated when she couldn\u2019t communicate,\u201d Joyce said. \u201cI witnessed firsthand how communication affects behavior, when you can\u2019t say what\u2019s going on \u2014 whether it\u2019s hunger, happiness or sadness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After receiving an autism diagnosis at age 3, the <a href=\"https:\/\/calliercenter.utdallas.edu\/evaluation- treatment\/pediatric-autism-spectrum-disorder-programs-services\/\">Lacertes\u2019 granddaughter attended Early Class<\/a>, a classroom-based speech, language and communication program for children with autism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI took her to speech class three to four days a week,\u201d Joyce said. \u201cAt first, she could say \u2018music\u2019 when she wanted me to play something in the car. By the time the year ended at Callier, she could actually request a song.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Early Class, the Lacertes\u2019 granddaughter was mainstreamed into preschool. Today, she is in first grade and enjoys reading and singing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe fact that Callier has resources available for children at an extremely young age \u2014 it\u2019s life altering!\u201d Larry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lacertes\u2019 experience at Callier led them to establish the Joyce and Larry Lacerte Pediatric Patient Care Endowment with a gift of $250,000. The endowment will ensure that children in need receive clinical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the waiting room, I heard parents talking and realized not everyone has insurance that will cover speech programs,\u201d Joyce said. \u201cNeither Larry or I grew up with much, and to be in a position where we can now give back, I think it is extremely gratifying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe more you give, the more you get out of it,\u201d Larry said. \u201cIt\u2019s not an obligation; it\u2019s a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCallier means everything to us,\u201d Joyce said. \u201cIt is beyond words.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a blessing to our family,\u201d Larry said. \u201cTo see our grandchildren be able to communicate, it\u2019s a lot more smiles and giggles!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p> <em>\u201cThe more you give, the more you get out of it.
