Training: Investing in Students

Excellence in Training

With your help, we will elevate our nationally ranked academic programs to be the most sought-after clinical and research training for speech, language and hearing disorders in the country by creating the Callier Diversity Fellows initiative, advancing the Clinician-Scientist Training Program and endowing graduate clinical fellowships for students.

Giving Opportunities

  1. Callier Diversity Fellows
  2. Clinician-Scientist Training Program
  3. Graduate Clinical Fellowships

1. Callier Diversity Fellows

Establish an endowment to award a qualified, underrepresented student with a fellowship toward the pursuit of a doctoral degree in audiology or a master’s degree in speech-language pathology.

Your investment could:

  • Promote diversity within the graduate student population and the healthcare profession by giving a student, who otherwise could not afford it, a graduate education and the opportunity to become an audiologist or speech-language pathologist.

  • Support the provision of an academic success advisor as well as a faculty mentor to guide and direct the student through their academic and clinical training at the Callier Center.

2. Clinician-Scientist Training Program

Shape the future of speech, language and hearing health care by supporting students in the Clinician-Scientist Training Program. In this program, students earn a clinical degree and a research degree. Audiology students pursue a doctoral degree in audiology to complete their clinical work in parallel with a Doctor of Philosophy degree to prepare them as a researcher. Speech-language pathology students pursue a Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology in parallel with a Doctor of Philosophy degree. The combined degrees establish a strong foundation for a career as a clinician-scientist.

The Clinician-Scientist Training Program molds exceptional students into clinician-scientists who will not only provide the next generation of patient care, but define it. Students receive the unique opportunity to work with master clinicians and faculty researchers on collaborative teams that strategically translate research ideas into clinical care. Students gain hands-on experience in the lab and real-world experience in the clinic. Patient care influences their research, and their research advances patient care. This invaluable education combination results in clinician-scientists who not only transform care for the patient population at Callier but go on to better thousands of lives across the country through leadership in patient care, education of future health care providers, and advancing the scientific foundation of speech and hearing evaluation and treatment.

Your investment could:

  • Support a student’s opportunity to become a clinician-scientist and therefore advance the integration of research with clinical care, which translates solutions discovered in the lab into innovative treatments for patients.

A Conversation with Monica Trevino AuD’21

“The role of a clinician-scientist is like a perfect harmony of two worlds. I’m a better scientist because I’m a clinician, and I’m a better clinician because I’m a scientist.”

Monica Trevino AuD’21 is a doctoral student in the Clinician-Scientist Training Program within the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the Callier Center. She earned a Doctor of Audiology in 2021 and expects to graduate with a Doctor of Philosophy in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences in 2022.

3. Graduate Clinical Fellowships

Provide need- or merit-based fellowships for graduate students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in audiology or a master’s degree in speech-language pathology.

Your investment could:

  • Support a graduate student’s education through clinical training in the audiology or speech-language pathology clinic at the Callier Center.
